Dog owners know their furry friends like the members of their family. So, even the slightest change in dog’s behavior will trigger your protective instincts. Just because they are different species, it doesn’t mean they can’t suffer from mental illnesses. However, mental health issues in dogs can be particularly challenging to diagnose. You may have a typical dog behavior like tail chasing, licking and chewing, but the cause might be deeply rooted in their brain.
According to many vets, paying close attention to your furry friend behavior is paramount. Considering dogs can’t speak, they will use other ways to tell you what’s bothering them. You need to know your pet, to help him, and even the smallest sign can help you determine their condition. But, if you are confused about the symptoms he is showing, then here are a couple of things you need to pay attention to.
Compulsive grooming
Some dogs like to be clean, so they will use every opportunity to lick their paws and clean their fur. But, if your dog licks or grooms an area reputedly, then that action may indicate a physical problem, such as injury. However, if your veterinarian has ruled out this possibility and your dog repeats this action to the point his paws become raw, then you are facing the mental condition. In this case, you should take your pet to a canine behaviorist, and he can determine the cause and the best way to treat it.
Excessive sleeping
If you own a mature dog, then you know that excessive sleeping is a normal condition for them. But, if your dog is younger, then it might be a cause for concern. Some diseases such as diabetes can cause significant sleeping habits, but also it can be a sign of depression. If your dog has lost a family member or animal companion, then sleeping is more than a usual and it is a sign of distress. Too much of sleep is definitely sign of a dog’s mental disorder and you need to work with your dog harder to make him happy again.
Acts strange
We all know that dogs are pretty unpredictable and they will act strangely in particular situation. But, these actions are often humorous and don’t have a specific meaning. However, if your dog show unusually strange behavior, then ask yourself if your pet has been through a rough time lately. Has there been some changes in his daily habits and are you the cause. Some dogs tend to behave strangely just because they changed the environment, or they experience death in the family. If so, this can be an indication that your dog has been stressed, depressed and anxious.
Staring into space
This is unusual behavior for dogs. Mostly they like to explore, follow the owners and roam around. Again said, this a typical reaction for older dogs, but for younger one, it can be a sign of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction. They are lost in space, and they will sit and stare into a corner until you move them along.
